Its All About Personality: What animal are you?

Today my students and I took a personality test. The test is one of the most accurate that I have ever seen. Although, I had already taken the test before, I enjoy giving this personality test to the class. It allows the students to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This personality tests is so indepth, it even identifies the type of personality that you are more likely to marry. To my knowledge the test does not have an official name, but basically it allows you to classify yourself into one of four categories. The categories are Otter, Beaver, Lion, and the Golden Retriever. Based on the results of the test, you can classify yourself as having the characteristics of the above animals. I am a Lion-Otter. This means that my highest score was the lion and my second highest score was the otter.

Strengths: (lion) organized, set long range goals, high standards, analytical, intelligent, enjoy researching, punctual and honest

Weakness: (lion) gets flustered if stressed, needs to interact more with others, learn to accept people.

Career Choice: doctor, artist, writers, engineers

Strengths: (otter) social creature, influence others, positive, goofy

Weakness: (otter) talk too much, "friends but no deep relationships", remembering commitments

I think that these two offer a good balance, because while I may forget somethings, at least I know that I have to write it down! I am goofy and I like to influence others through leadership and mentorship. But I don't like to be too close to anyone who is not my family. I begin to feel uncomfortable. I set goals and work towards achieving them, often over working and over indulging in the goal setting. Also, since I enjoy leading others and helping people, its always easy for me to take on the role of mentor, helper, teacher, etc. I want everyone to be happy, so I will try to make things fun. Does it always happen that way, of course not! But at least I made the effort. One short coming of the lion was that we tend to work too hard (but with a passion). Because of this we often forget to take care of ourselves or reach out to those closes to us. That is why, I think the "Otter" personality tends to come out in me, because of the need to socialize and interact with others after working long hours or spending the entire weekend locked away doing homework. I just want to let my hair down and relax!!!!

As leaders, entrepreneurs, mentors, and professionals, knowing our people is one of the most important elements of a good work environment. We all have strengths and weaknesses. As management, we must identify our own strengths and weaknesses and set an example by seeking to improve and grow as an individual. It is also important for us to know the personalities of the people we work with on a daily basis. If one of my students doesn't seem like them self, then as a teacher it is my job to ensure that they are ok. Managers must be willing to help individuals refocus and get back on track. Part of good leadership ethics is knowing your people. In the Air Force, we have a motto, which goes: "mission first, people always". Although the goal is important, you cannot achieve it without the help of people. So it is important for us to reach out and help others and to lead by example. Its not always just about business. Set an example by seeking to improve your weaknesses and enhance your strengths.

Have I always been a Lion-Otter personality? Yes, but in the beginning I was almost entirely lion. Because I have begun interacting more with others, over the past couple of years my personality has begin to change. I had to be willing to identify my weaknesses and adjust, especially because I am a teacher. You cannot always be so rigid, and being in a military training environment, I think my students should be able to smile and relax a little. While I will always probably be a lion, some days I feel totally like a otter, and when I am working to meet a deadline, you would swear I was a beaver. And if I am totally relaxed, "golden retriever" here I come!
